2024 Hornsby Art Prizes winners and award recipients have been announced.
The Hornsby Art Prize is a national competition aimed at celebrating outstanding Australian talent in the world of contemporary art. It is hosted by Hornsby Shire Council in partnership with the Hornsby Art Society.
Over 560 artworks were submitted from artists across Australia. Categories included Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Digital Art Stills/ Digital Photography, and Sculpture. Artists competed to get their hands on a prize pool of $23,000, with the major prize being worth $10,000. Judges of the Hornsby Art Prize were Director of Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, Sebastian Goldspink, and printmaker and teacher, Rew Hanks.
Taking home the top prize with his painting Labour Plein Air is Dave Snook from St Andrews in Sydney’s South-West.
‘Congratulations to our winner, award recipients and finalists. Hornsby Shire Council is committed to supporting arts and culture and it is fantastic to come together and celebrate local and Australia-wide talent,’ said Mayor of Hornsby Shire Council, Warren Waddell.
The Hornsby Shire Local Artist Award was won by David Collins from Dangar Island for his painting Barrier Range.
In his artist statement, David said, ‘During a recent Artist’s Residency in Broken Hill, I was struck by the juxtaposition of the ancient, timeless land and the temporary, fragile human structures that sit on it.’
Other award recipients included Orlando Luminere for his fine art print Wasted View: Brooklyn #0088 who won the Digital Art Stills/Digital Photography Award. Dave Doyle and his cast bronze artwork Eroded won the Sculpture Award. Lucy O’Doherty and her soft pastel artwork 80s kitchen with CD rack, carrot magnet and unfinished peas won the Drawing Award. Carolyn Craig and her work Becoming Penguin won the Printmaking Award. Peter Sharp and his piece Pebble won the Painting Award.
Held at the Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre, the exhibition where the artworks of all finalists, winners, and recipients will be from the 25th October until the 10th November 2024. Entry is free.
