Mosman Art Gallery has awarded the 2025 Mosman Art Prize to Mark Maurangi Carrol for his painting Blue Boat (crowd on the island of Magaia).
Carrol’s work reinterprets a 1900 photograph by Fredrick W.Sears, replacing the original crowd with a single modern figure—the artist’s brother.
This year’s prize was judged by Justin Paton, Head Curator of International Art at the Art Gallery of NSW. Paton is known for major curatorial projects, including Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day? (2023,) and the inaugural Nelson Packer Tank commission.
Now in its 78th year, the Mosman Art Prize is Australia’s longest-running municipal art award. With a $70,000 acquisition prize funded by Mosman Council, it remains one of the nation’s most renowned platforms for contemporary painting. Winning works are acquired into the Mosman Art Collection, which includes pieces by Margaret Olley, Grace Cossington Smith, Adam Cullen, Natasha Walsh, and many others.
This year, more than 1,400 entries were received, with 72 finalists selected.
Additional awards include:
- Margret Olley Commendation Award ($10,000) awarded to Tim Price for Life’s on Time
- Allan Gamble Award ($5,000) awarded to Celia Gullet for Variations series VI
- Guy Warren Emerging Artist Award ($3,000) awarded to Emily Galieck for Sampler (design for a ceiling)
- Installers’ Choice Award awarded to Jumaadi for Dalam Gerimis (In the mist)
- Viewers’ Choice Award ($1,000) to be announced later in the exhibition
