Cherrybrook resident and TAFE NSW Ryde graduate Thomas Downing recently took to the global stage to represent Australia at the 48th WorldSkills International Competition in Shanghai.
The prestigious event, which ran from 22 to 27 September, brought together the world’s best emerging skilled professionals to compete in more than 60 disciplines. Participants were challenged in simulated real-world workplace environments, benchmarking their technical and problem-solving abilities against global industry standards.
Mr Downing, who completed a Certificate III in Landscape Construction, joined teammate Tully Hill to compete in the landscaping and horticulture discipline. He was one of 10 TAFE NSW students selected for the 38-member Australian “Skillaroos” national team.
Speaking on the achievement, Mr Downing noted that the discipline requires meticulous attention to detail across both design and construction.
“I’m honoured to represent Australia on the world stage in the competition, which is about much more than building a landscape,” Mr Downing said. “Every plant choice must be deliberate, considering how it will grow, how it complements the design and how it responds to the environment.”
The local landscaper credited his support network for his success, noting that his parents and mentors encouraged him to step outside his comfort zone and gave him the confidence to pursue the opportunity.
“Representing your country at a global competition like WorldSkills International is an extraordinary achievement and a testament to Thomas’s exceptional talent, skill and dedication,” Minister Whan said.
Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan, said the strong presence of TAFE NSW students on the national team is a testament to the state’s vocational education sector.
He added that the students’ skills are actively helping to build the state’s future workforce.
