A word from our sub-editor – Esme Mathis

SUMMER is here! As we enter into the warmer months, I would like to reflect on the positive ways the sun affects our health.

We are all familiar with the harmful risks of UV radiation and sun exposure. However, moderate doses of sunshine can seriously boost our physical and mental wellbeing.

Exposure to sunlight increases the brain’s release of serotonin, a feel-good hormone that will keep you calm, positive and focused.

Soaking up the sun is also linked to better sleep. Light plays a central role in regulating circadian rhythm, the body’s internal clock that signals when to be alert and when to rest. Early morning sunlight will not only wake you up, but it will actually improve your sleep that night. This is because sunlight affects the production of melatonin, an essential sleep-promoting hormone.

Sunshine is also the best way to get some Vitamin D. Vitamin D – also known as the “sunshine vitamin” – is essential for bone and muscle health as it allows our body to absorb calcium effectively. The vitamin also boosts your immunity by enhancing the function of immune cells (such as macrophages), protecting your body against pathogens.

If you are going to be outside in the sun for more than 10-15 minutes, be SunSmart and apply sunscreen.

However, I hope I have given you some cause to go outside and enjoy some sunshine this summer.
