The Post wishes all students the best of luck for their upcoming HSC exams in October.
One reader shares a wonderful poem she has written for her son graduating from Barker College…
Through the Mint Gates
The morning sun shone as I helped you rise.
And there you were, standing before my very eyes.
Dressed in a new uniform to take you through your day.
“Hold my hand, darling, I’ll show you the way.”
Little school shoes with room to grow.
Stepping through the Mint Gates, a new place to get to know.
As I let go of your hand, a sudden twinge in my heart.
But I knew it was time for us to be apart.
To leave you in the care of those who teach,
There to guide you and show how far you can reach.
From English to maths, geography and more.
To running, swimming, rugby.. the crowds would roar.
Many of us watched on over the years,
Through your triumphs and occasional tears,
Yet you continued to march on through,
Each day evolving and learning something new.
And now, with shoes that fit, it’s time to steady your stride,
With heartfelt gratitude to all who have walked by your side.
The ones who guided you through your foundational years.
Oh, how I gasp for my breath to hold back the tears.
The morning sun shines, you need no help to rise.
And here you are, standing before my very eyes.
Dressed in your final uniform to take you through your day.
You’ve let go of my hand, darling; through the Mint Gates you’ve found your way.
Dedicated to my son, Oliver Wright, and for those who share the sentiment on the eve of a transitioning chapter”.
