Building on the momentum of National Homelessness Week earlier this August – when I took to the streets and championed grassroots community efforts across Sydney, Homelessness NSW has now launched a major festive season push calling for state-level structural reform.
The new initiative invites frontline homelessness services, community organisations, and residents across Sydney and New South Wales to send personalised postcards directly to Premier Chris Minns at Parliament House.
In Short
- Direct Civic Action: Homelessness NSW has launched a festive campaign inviting community members to write personalised postcards directly to Premier Chris Minns.
- Urgent Funding Needs: The campaign calls for a 50 per cent boost to frontline homelessness services funding to support overburdened crisis providers.
- Ambitious Build Target: Advocates are demanding the construction of 10,000 social homes annually until social dwellings represent 10 per cent of all NSW housing.
- December Delivery: Completed postcards must be submitted by 1 December 2026 for collective handover at Parliament House before the holiday recess.
Part of the ongoing “A Place to Call Home and the Support to Keep It” campaign, the drive comes as local support services face unprecedented demand amidst rising cost-of-living pressures.
Through the postcard campaign, Homelessness NSW is urging the Minns Government to deliver on two core demands:
Increase homelessness services funding by 50% to bolster essential frontline support and strengthen early intervention initiatives.
Build 10,000 social homes every year until social housing accounts for 10 per cent of all housing across NSW.
Following The Post’s coverage of local grassroots advocacy during Homelessness Week – including campaigns drawing attention to the more than 124,000 Australians experiencing homelessness – this latest push shifts focus directly to lawmakers as the end of the year approaches.
Community members and local services can request postcard packs online, fill them out with messages detailing local impacts and needs, and return them to Homelessness NSW by 1 December 2026.
The collected postcards will then be delivered in bulk to Premier Minns at Parliament House in December.
