A new fully accessible kitchen at Studio ARTES is helping create greater opportunities for independence, skill development and participation, ensuring members can make the most of the studio’s life skills programs.

The kitchen has been designed to meet a range of accessibility needs. Its stovetop and sink can be raised and loweared, with space underneath to allow wheelchair users to work comfortably.

The cupboards can also be adjusted to different heights, while the taps are easy to operate for people with limited strength in their arms.

In Short

  • Accessible design: The newly upgraded kitchen features adjustable stovetops, sinks, and cupboards to accommodate wheelchair users and members with limited arm strength.
  • Community funding: The vital project was made possible by an initial $7,500 contribution and a subsequent $46,000 Great BIG Community Grant from Community Bank Lindfield.
  • Empowering independence: The bespoke facility ensures all Studio ARTES members can equally participate in life skills programs, build practical skills, and boost their self-confidence.

The journey to fund the accessible kitchen began at Community Pitch 2025, an initiative run by Community Bank Lindfield that brings local businesses, organisations and community groups together to support local charities.

During the event, Studio ARTES received $7,500 towards its kitchen project.

That initial contribution helped get the project underway, but a significant further investment was needed to make the vision a reality.

Earlier this year, Studio ARTES was awarded a $46,000 Great BIG Community Grant from Community Bank Lindfield, providing the funding required to complete the renovation.

For Studio ARTES, this project is about much more than a kitchen renovation. The newly renovated kitchen enables members to equally access and participate in life skills programs and shared spaces. Accessible facilities provide greater opportunities for members to make choices, develop practical skills and build confidence in their abilities.

The project also supports Studio ARTES’ commitment to equity across the studio, ensuring members, regardless of their support needs, have access to the same opportunities to engage, learn and contribute to the community.

The response from members has already been enthusiastic, with many delighted to be able to use more of the kitchen and its facilities.

The project is a practical example of how community support can create lasting change – turning a fundraising contribution, and banking with Community Bank Lindfield where the majority of profits are returned to the community,  into a purpose-built space that promotes inclusion, independence and greater participation in everyday activities.
