In their return to Sydney over January, the Imperial Ice Stars performed at the Sydney Coliseum Theatre for a limited engagement of Swan Lake On Ice.
In the tragic folk tale, Princess Odette is cursed by sorcerer Rothbart to transform into a swan by day, the curse only broken by a man promising his eternal love.
Ice-skating and ballet seem a match made in heaven, with the two arts crossing over on a number of fronts – both have an element of elegance and athleticism baked in, not to mention a heavy consideration for the beauty of movement.

Swan Lake On Ice captivated the attention of the Sydney audience, with skilful spins, jumps, and step sequences. The expressive acting of the cast, the refined set design and costuming, the lighting effects, and the inclusion of Tchaikovsky’s famous composition allowed the audience to follow the story as it unfolded.
With 250 competition medals between the 23 Olympic, European, and National Championship skaters, the production showcased the daring skills of the cast by incorporating gasoline and fire into the routine, lifting the performers to “fly” on hoists, and using ropes for aerial dancing.
By the end, the immersive 2-hour show felt perfectly paced. Though often a tragedy, Swan Lake On Ice delivered a satisfying end for Princess Odette and her beloved, Prince Siegfried.
