Tanya Taylor sets sights on Mayor

Tanya Taylor has been a resident of Willoughby for over 20 years.  Her three children were born here and all attend local schools, and her husband operates their small family business from Willoughby.  She has long been an active member of the community across many volunteer roles in a leadership capacity, and has previous hands-on experience working in local government.

Taylor is running as an independent running for Middle Harbour Ward and for Mayor of Willoughby City, with a platform focused around preserving the natural beauty and vibrant community of Willoughby.

“I love our community – the beautiful pockets of bushland, our vibrant village hubs, the supportive networks and neighbourhoods and our beautiful bays and open parklands.  We’re so fortunate that we live in such a supportive and strong community.  And I honestly think that not much needs to change.  However, we do need to ensure we don’t become too overdeveloped, that we take climate action seriously, and we have a strong focus on rebuilding our community and revitalising our local economy post Covid-19.” Said Taylor.

Taylor is passionate about re-building the Willoughby community coming out of lockdown.

“I’m keen to initiate some multi-generational events and council driven initiatives that are fun, safe and inclusive, to help build resilience, celebrate diversity and to bring us back together.  Our libraries and community centres should be current, relevant and accessible – and reflect the needs and wants of the community.”

Environmental protection and sustainability are also core parts of Tanya’s platform.

“I’m concerned too about our environment.  Our council needs to drive clean energy initiatives to ensure we remain on target to reach net zero emissions by 2030, or even sooner.  We need to support community to transfer to renewable energy and provide information and resources for other climate friendly initiatives.  Implementing infrastructure such as solar-powered streetlights, providing a wider variety of recycling options for residents and addressing food waste are some measures that I would drive to help us curb the effects of climate change.”

Taylor summed up her platform as being all about “a commitment to community and creating a sustainable and enjoyable environment for all of us.”
