Council also launched a new online Tree Dashboard to help residents find information about the local tree canopy and urban forest.
Nominations for the Iconic Tree Register are now open, and members of the community are invited to suggest trees deserving of the iconic status.
Ku-ring-gai Mayor Christine Kay invited the community to participate in the evolving project, by sharing their stories, photos and memories of iconic trees.
“Ku-ring-gai’s urban forest is one of the greatest tree canopies in Sydney and it deserves to be celebrated,” Mayor Kay said.
“Trees are a defining feature of Ku-ring-gai and an important part of our local identity. Our community values its leafy streets, bushland and tree canopy.
Developed following a recommendation from Council’s Environment Advisory Committee, the Iconic Tree Register aims to celebrate the important role trees play in Ku-ring-gai’s history, character and environment, while encouraging greater community stewardship.
Ku-ring-gai Council is committed to maintaining and increasing its tree canopy through the Urban Forest Strategy, including tree plantings and action against illegal tree removals. Council supports the NSW Government’s 5 Million Trees initiative to increase canopy across Greater Sydney to 40% by 2030.
An independent report in 2022 found Ku-ring-gai’s total vegetation cover was 68.9% of the local government area and the tree canopy (vegetation 3m and above) covered 50% of the local government area.
