Locals get nod for sporting achievements

Four North Shore locals are in the running to recognise achievements in sports at the prestigious NSW Sports Awards night in January.

The celebrations identify the achievements of NSW’s top athletes, coaches, administrators, and organisations, with awards being offered across 12 categories.

Paralympians Tyan Taylor (Berowra) and Amy Ridley (West Pymble) are being recognised for their achievements in the Australian Women’s Goalball Team’s most recent campaign in Tokyo.

The two have been nominated for Athlete of the Year with a Disability and Young Athlete of the Year with a Disability respectively.

The Aussie Belles left the Tokyo Paralympic Games with victories against Canada and the Russian Olympic Committee- the first for the team at Paralympic level for 25 years. Both Taylor’s and Ridley’s contributions resulted in the team’s most successful Paralympics campaign to date.

In other nominations, Tennis NSW CEO, Lawrence Robertson (West Pennant Hills), has been shortlisted for the award of Administrator of the Year, and Track and Field judge, Janet Nixon (Beecroft), has been recognised for her efforts in officiating at the Tokyo Olympics with a nomination for Official of the Year.

Sport NSW Chairperson, Carolyn Campbell, has congratulated all nominated sportspeople, saying their achievements have acted as a light at the end of the tunnel for NSW people who’ve been in and out of COVID-19-induced lockdowns.

“With sport being severely disrupted because of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years, the 2021 NSW Sport Awards Finalist have provided a ray of sunshine lifting spirits and providing instances of inspiration and motivation,” Campbell said.

“The finalists uphold NSW’s well-earned reputation as Australia’s premier sports state. They join a magnificent assembly of previous athletes, coaches, administrators and organisations who have been considered as finalists in the most prestigious sports Awards NSW offers.”
