Community and Camaraderie at Dural Men’s Shed

International Men’s Day (IMD), celebrated on 19 November, honours the positive contributions of men and raises awareness of men’s well-being issues.

 A shining example of IMD’s ideals is the Dural Men’s Shed, a workshop and social space located at The Centre in Dural. Founded in 2011, the shed now has around 130–140 members who meet twice a week for woodworking, electronics, gardening, and a good laugh.

“Men don’t talk face-to-face as easily as women,” says one coordinator. “But shoulder-to-shoulder at a workbench, they’ll chat.” The shed offers an inclusive, peer-led environment that helps men find purpose, share skills and combat isolation. It’s not just a place to build it’s a place to belong.

Weekly, the shed hosts Warrah Special School students and Galston High School boys, helping them develop hands-on skills and confidence.

In September, Dural Men’s Shed joined other local groups at a BBQ fundraiser in Thornleigh, raising funds for men’s health and showcasing handcrafted items.

As IMD approaches, Dural Men’s Shed continues its quiet work of connection and contribution. New members are always. As one member put it, “Bring your skills or just your willingness to learn.”
