International Volunteering Day

5 December 2024

Every year on 5 December, the world comes together to celebrate International Volunteering Day. It is a time to salute the priceless contributions of volunteers and the profound impact that selfless service can have on our communities.

This spirit of giving back is a deeply ingrained part of Australian culture, with widespread participation across the country. In 2020, more than 5.025 million people across the nation volunteered through various organisations or groups. Australians of all backgrounds come together to give their time and expertise to support causes, highlighting a collective commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.

Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury Sydney (H2HS) is an organisation that harnesses the collective efforts of over 1,000 volunteers to strengthen community resilience and promote suicide safety. “People are our superpower. Every part of our organisation is driven by incredible people, whose passion and commitment are evidenced in our impact.” – Elizabeth Lovell, Lifeline H2HS CEO.

Volunteering not only enriches the lives of those receiving support but also fosters meaningful connections between volunteers and their communities.

“Without a doubt, the people I have met is the best part of volunteering.” – Jacki W, Lifeline Community Aid volunteer.

“Volunteering has given me the chance to make a positive impact on people’s lives, which is incredibly fulfilling.” – Alex S, Lifeline Crew volunteer.

“Volunteering gives me a sense that I am contributing to a cause greater than myself.” – Anais K, Lifeline Retail Shop volunteer.

As we celebrate International Volunteering Day, let us recognise and appreciate the dedication of volunteers everywhere, who tirelessly work to support and uplift their communities.

Take the first steps towards volunteering by getting in touch with organisations who support causes that resonate with your values, whether it’s mental health, environmental conservation, education, or community service.
