Isla, a Labrador Retriever working in Hornsby, has been named the 2026 People’s Choice Award winner for The Puppy Tales Australian Dog of the Year Awards.
Founded six years ago by Kerry Martin, the Awards celebrate and recognise dogs who have brought comfort, restored independence, and make a difference in the lives of others.
As the People’s Choice Award winner, the public voted for Isla, meaning her story touched and inspired not just a judging panel, but Australia.
Partnered together in July of 2023, Isla and Karlee Symond have formed an unbreakable bond. Legally blind, prior to Isla, Karlee navigated the world feeling isolation and anxiety, with everyday tasks being difficult and overwhelming. With Isla by her side, Karlee has gained independence and confidence, able to enrol in university and secure employment.
‘It’s safe to say I am no longer afraid of bin day or navigating crowds, as I know Isla will keep me safe,’ Karlee said. ‘Isla is my eyes, my best friend and my other half.’
As part of the award, a $250 donation will be made to Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, supporting the training of future partnerships like Isla and Karlee’s.
“Isla’s story is a powerful reminder of what guide dogs make possible. Through trust, training and partnership, she has restored independence, confidence and freedom in a way that reshapes everyday life. Isla’s impact is not abstract, it is lived, practical and deeply transformative,’ said Agnes Beugnon, Australian Dog Lover publisher and member of the judging panel.
