Regardless of age, everyone has a political stance or opinion. Where once being ‘Politically Aware’ might have only been a term reserved for folks sitting at a parliamentary desk.
Today, the preaching of political opinion is open to any community member. The importance of young Aussies showcasing and voicing their community concerns should be admired; listening to a fresh and possibly unique perspective is just another way society can better itself.
More recently, the YMCA announced their 2023 Youth members and elected the 2023 Youth Parliamentary Cabinet.
The YMCA Youth Parliament is a long-standing youth leadership program for high school students keen to engage in parliamentary debate and bolster leadership qualities. Offering young community members the chance to speak on issues concerning them and their community. With approximately 1000 youth participants over the last ten years.
One of these members, Laura Strawbridge, Ku-ring-Gai High School’s captain and long-time Pymble resident, was selected as one of the 2023 Youth MPs and elected as the youth member for Wahroonga in February this year. Laura spoke about her inspiration to throw her hat in the application ring.
“I know many former YMCA Youth MP’s who have spoken highly about the program and the opportunities it brings, which inspired me to apply.”
Taking her love for her local community into her decision-making.
“I have always been involved in bringing positive change to the community, so participating in the program is the perfect way to continue that.”
Her cohort elected Laura as Deputy Opposition Leader for the Youth Parliamentary Cabinet, a position she was selected for while attending the YMCA Youth MP training camp.
“As a Youth MP, it is incredibly exciting to raise awareness of issues faced by people in our amazing community,” Laura stated, speaking more on her role.
“When considering things politically, I tend to think about what will benefit the community in the long run on a case-by-case basis and support things that I believe will have a genuine and meaningful impact.”
Playing the ultimate juggling act, Laura takes on her new political role while working part-time as a crew trainer and area leader at Hornsby McDonald’s, simultaneously completing her final year of study as school captain at Ku-ring-Gai High School.
“It has been challenging to balance these roles, but it has been incredibly rewarding. I am so grateful and fortunate to have a supportive Principal, teachers, friends and family to help me along the way.”
“Regarding Youth Parliament, working with the amazing Leader of the Opposition James, we have a very passionate shadow ministry working towards creating a better NSW.
Shining a light on the support from her local MPs. “I would also like to thank our local member, Alister Henskens, for nominating and sponsoring me to participate in the program and for the support he has given me over the years. I also thank local Federal MP Paul Fletcher for his continuous support.”
As a definite future leader within the community, Laura continues to inspire all young Aussies to be young and driven community members. She proves that age is merely a number in the world of politics.
