In May of 2025, Ku-ring-gai Council took possession of Norman Griffiths Oval, and terminated the contract with the original builder. Now, Council has decided what the future of Norman Griffiths Oval will look like.
Norman Griffiths has divided the community. In one camp, locals are insisting that natural turf is a far better option, noting destruction and damage to Quarry Creek through sediment pollution. On the other hand, the use of a synthetic turf field would allow local sporting clubs to operate throughout the year, not beholden to drainage or weather issues.
After terminating the contract with Turf One, Council’s project team arranged for a dilapidated report, a Works as Executed survey, a quantity survey, and an independent investigation into the project assessing compliance and effectiveness.
Findings from a report containing advice from industry experts led to Mayor Christine Kay scheduling an
Extraordinary Meeting, which was held on 11 September.
During the meeting, Council resolved to proceed with completing the project, and installing a synthetic field.
To achieve the project’s completion, Council has committed an additional $5.4 million.
Prior to ending the contract with Turf One, the project’s budget was revised in February of 2025 to over $6.8 million.
Council claim there are sufficient funds available in Council’s infrastructure and facilities reserve to facilitate the upgrade.
The upgrade will include lighting, fencing, pathways, landscaping and a new electronic scoreboard.
The next phase of the project will be investigating the latest technology in synthetic turf.
