Thornleigh Tree Dispute: Resident Buys House to Save Tree

As someone who’s worked in the disability sector for many years, I’ve seen that a good life is shaped by so much more than NDIS funded supports.

While these play a critical part in participants’ lives, the environments they live in and the communities around them have just as much influence on their sense of fulfilment, independence and belonging.

Key Takeaways

  • Beyond NDIS Funding: A fulfilling life depends on welcoming environments, accessible spaces, and social connection just as much as formal NDIS supports.
  • Value of Local Resources: Free and low-cost council initiatives, inclusive transport, and community groups help build real-world independence and reduce social isolation.
  • Inclusive Design Principles: Thoughtfully designed public and private spaces ensure people with disability feel welcomed, confident, and capable of participating fully.
  • Cross-Sector Collaboration: As foundational supports expand, stronger partnerships between councils, health providers, and businesses form a safety net for the whole community.

In places like the Northern Beaches and North Shore, free and low-cost local resources, accessible council programs, social activities and inclusive transport options add value to people’s lives because they build real-world connection that’s not dependent on their NDIS funding.

Accessible homes and welcoming public spaces can also make a real difference. Inclusive design isn’t just about meeting accessibility requirements, it’s about creating places where people feel considered, welcomed and able to take part with confidence.

And strong and inclusive communities create support networks that help people feel connected, valued and like they belong. A council-run class, a volunteer group, a local community hub or a friendly neighbourhood connection can all become part of a person’s safety net. These everyday opportunities help reduce isolation, build confidence and support people to feel more in control of their lives.

As the disability landscape continues to evolve, especially with a stronger focus on foundational supports, mainstream services and community-based options, collaboration matters more than ever. Councils, health services, organisations, businesses and local groups each hold a piece of the puzzle. When they work together, community becomes more than a backdrop; it becomes part of the support system.

When communities invest in accessibility, wellbeing and belonging, everyone benefits. That, to me, is where a good life truly begins.

Whether it is holding local councils accountable, exploring real estate and business trends, or celebrating local arts, sports, and school milestones, we cover the full spectrum of local life.

Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic—a time when over 200 newsrooms shuttered across the country - Tina Brown established the publication (originally known as the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Post) to provide one reliable source of truth. We ensure our community never has to scour multiple Facebook groups just to find out what is happening in their own backyard.
