Key Takeaways

  • Community Collaboration: Ku-ring-gai Police joined local families in Thornleigh to proactively address modern safety challenges facing local youth.
  • Digital Wellbeing: Educational discussions focused heavily on identifying cyberbullying and establishing healthy screen time habits.
  • Local Transport: Officers provided practical, timely guidance for responsible e-bike usage on local roads and footpaths.
  • Agency Support: The event was bolstered by critical community partners including KYDS Youth Counselling and Relationships Australia.

On Friday, 26 June, Thornleigh Hillcrest Uniting Church hosted a highly successful “How to Be a Safe Kid” family event, bringing the community together to tackle important safety challenges facing today’s youth.

Officers from the Ku-ring-gai Local Area Command Police, including the Multicultural Community Liaison Officer and Youth Officer, attended the session to connect with local families and share vital safety messages directly with the community.

The event provided parents and children with engaging activities and valuable information, made possible through the collaboration of several fantastic community partners:

  • KYDS Youth Counselling
  • Relationships Australia
  • Mission Australia
  • Hornsby Girls High School
  • Services Australia

During the educational session, families received practical advice and resources to help navigate the modern safety landscape.

The discussions specifically covered identifying and preventing online harassment through cyberbullying awareness, and establishing healthy digital habits regarding screen time and online safety.

The session also addressed navigating local roads and paths responsibly on e-bikes, as well as building social media awareness to better understand the impact and risks of social platforms.

“It was a great opportunity to connect with local families, share important safety messages, and strengthen community partnerships.” Organisers extended a massive thank you to everyone involved – from the participating agencies to the families who attended – for making the event such a resounding success.
