Across the North Shore and Northern Beaches regions, where high home equity and self-managed super funds (SMSFs) make local investors an attractive target, authorities are urging heightened vigilance.

The ‘Friendly’ WhatsApp Group Trap
One of the most prevalent tactics highlighted by Scamwatch involves fraudulent WhatsApp groups centred around shared hobbies, such as local rock fishing or weekend sports groups.
Scammers join or create these groups under the guise of genuine community interest. Once trust is established among members, a syndicate member posing as a “professor” or “senior financial expert” begins subtle promotion of a high-yield trading platform.
How the WhatsApp Scam Unfolds:
- Entry: Scammers set up or join a casual interest group (e.g., sport, fishing).
- Trust: Group “assistants” build rapport and introduce a trading scheme.
- Proof: Accomplices post fabricated screenshots of massive daily gains.
- Trap: Investors deposit funds; fake platforms display rapid growth.
- Extortion: Withdrawals are blocked unless extra “fees” or “taxes” are paid.
In many instances, accomplices inside the chat post fake testimonials and fabricated trading profits to build credibility. Victims who attempt to withdraw their funds are instructed to pay additional “taxes” or “administrative fees,” after which the scammers sever contact and disappear with the money.
Spoofed Media Outlets and Celebrity ‘News’
The alert also highlights a rise in cloned news websites designed to bypass skepticism. Scammers have been creating fake web pages impersonating international outlets like Reuters to claim fraudulent trading platforms have passed official security audits or formed “partnerships”.
Rather than featuring obvious celebrity endorsement ads, fraudsters are publishing fake news reports about public figures—such as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg—to draw readers into registering on unlicensed trading sites.
Word-of-Mouth and Ponzi Risks
Investment scams are also spreading through trusted networks across North Shore suburbs.
In these cases, friends, family members, or neighbours unknowingly recommend an investment scheme because their account balance appears to be growing rapidly.
Some schemes offer referral bonuses or commissions for recruiting contacts. However, the ACCC notes these returns are often fabricated or paid using capital from newer investors—a classic Ponzi structure that inevitably collapses, leaving later investors with total losses.

Unsolicited Group Invites: Being added to WhatsApp or Telegram groups discussing cryptocurrency, foreign exchange, or stock trading without your consent.
Promises of Guaranteed Returns: Any offer claiming high, low-risk, or unusually consistent profits.
Pressure to Act: Urgency to sign up before limited “spots” close.
Withdrawal Demands: Requests to pay extra taxes, service charges, or release fees to withdraw your own funds.
Third-Party Verification Claims: Links to news articles or celebrity stories claiming a platform is government-approved or safety-verified.
Protecting Your Investments
If you receive an investment pitch or invitation, Scamwatch recommends a strict STOP, CHECK, PROTECT response:
STOP: Do not rush into transferring money or providing personal details, even if recommended by someone you know.
CHECK: Verify that the entity or advisor holds a valid Australian Financial Services (AFS) licence via ASIC’s Professional Registers. Always search for company contact details independently rather than using links provided in chat groups or news articles.
PROTECT: If you suspect you have transferred funds to a fraudulent platform, contact your bank immediately to attempt a transaction hold or recall.
