Men’s Mental Health: The Real Cost of Silence in Couples

This Movember, relationship coaching examines why men carrying struggles alone can create unintended fractures between partners.

What happens when a man feels he has to carry his struggles alone?

November is Movember, a time to bring attention to men’s mental health. And while we often talk about encouraging men to open up, I wonder if we’re overlooking something important: what happens to a relationship when a man feels he has to carry his struggles alone?

Many men have grown up believing that being strong means staying in control, solving problems and remaining someone their partner can depend on. Admitting they’re struggling, particularly when they don’t have a solution, can feel like they’re somehow failing in that role.

In Short

  • The Hidden Strain: Believing strength means handling challenges alone often leads to emotional withdrawal and unspoken relationship tension.
  • Misread Signals: When men retreat during periods of stress, partners often interpret the distance as relationship dissatisfaction rather than private distress.
  • Past Vulnerability: Prior negative experiences, such as having vulnerabilities weaponised or dismissed, frequently entrench a habit of guarding feelings.
  • Strength in Candour: Sharing the weight of a difficult period does not mean demanding rescue; it creates space for mutual trust and respect.

For some, that belief comes from painful experiences. Perhaps they’ve opened up in the past, only to have their vulnerability dismissed, criticised or even used against them during an argument. It’s understandable why someone might become more guarded after that.

But there’s a cost to keeping everything inside, and it’s often paid by both people in the relationship.

Imagine a man dealing with enormous pressure at work, financial uncertainty or a personal challenge he hasn’t yet figured out how to navigate. He’s distracted, irritable or unusually quiet. His partner notices something has changed, but she doesn’t know why.

Without understanding what’s happening, she starts filling in the gaps herself. Is he unhappy with her? Has something changed between them? She might withdraw, become anxious or try harder to connect when what he actually needs is a little space and understanding.

Meanwhile, he may feel frustrated that she doesn’t recognise what he’s going through, even though he hasn’t given her the opportunity to understand.

Neither person is necessarily doing anything wrong. They’re simply responding to different versions of the same situation.

In my coaching sessions with men, I often come across the belief that admitting they’re struggling might cause their partner to lose respect for them. I usually challenge that assumption with a different possibility.

What if allowing your partner to see how difficult something is could actually deepen her respect for you?

There’s a significant difference between expecting someone to rescue you and allowing them to understand what you’re experiencing.
