As the nationwide cost-of-living emergency deepens, Samantha Bing prepares to swap her home for the pavement of Circular Quay, launching a profound campaign to dismantle the invisibility surrounding rough sleepers.

Across Australia, a silent catastrophe is unfolding. The tightening grip of the financial crisis is no longer just affecting grocery budgets and mortgage payments, it is fundamentally breaking the nation’s social safety net.

Key Takeaways

  • Seven-Night Campaign: Local volunteer Samantha Bing will sleep rough 24/7 at Circular Quay starting 3 August 2026 to mark Homelessness Week.
  • $100,000 Target: The 'Still Human' campaign seeks to raise vital funds for frontline services while dismantling public desensitisation around rough sleeping.
  • 'Sit With Me' Initiative: Invites commuters, leaders, and community members to pull up a patch of pavement for open conversations about the reality of street life.
  • National Housing Emergency: Highlights urgent sector data showing over 124,000 homeless Australians, with nearly 54,000 being women and children.

Recent data reveals that over 124,000 Australians are currently without a stable roof over their heads, with nearly 54,000 of them being women and children.

As inflation squeezes households, thousands more stand on the precipice, terrifyingly close to the edge. It is against this backdrop of worsening national hardship that Samantha Bing, a dedicated local disability services worker and long-time volunteer, is launching her most ambitious initiative yet.

Starting August 3rd, to coincide with Homelessness Week, Bing will spend seven consecutive nights sleeping rough on the streets of Sydney.

The campaign, appropriately titled Still Human, aims to raise $100,000 for frontline support systems while challenging the growing public desensitisation toward rough sleeping.

For Bing, who has spent nearly nine years volunteering on the frontlines with St Vincent de Paul Society’s Van Patrol and founded the Homeless Christmas Drive a decade ago, this winter initiative is about humanising a crisis that society has largely learned to walk past.

“What struck me most wasn’t just that people were sleeping rough – it was how normalised it had become,” Bing reflects. “People walk past, step over others sleeping in doorways, and accept it as part of everyday life. This campaign is about changing hearts, changing perspectives, and helping people see the human being behind homelessness.”

Bing is quick to clarify that her week on the pavement is not an attempt to simulate real trauma.

“The purpose is not to claim lived experience or suggest that one week can replicate the true,

systemic horror of homelessness,” she states firmly. “I have the luxury of an annual leave

balance, a start date, and a definitive end date. Thousands of vulnerable Australians do not.”

Bing’s seven-day campaign comes at a time when frontline services are experiencing unprecedented demand. Broader sector reporting from organisations like The Salvation Army outlines a “hidden human toll” sweeping the country. Their research indicates that 38% of renters are genuinely terrified of losing their homes, while a staggering 54% of individuals facing severe financial distress feel that society simply does not care about their plight.

Furthermore, the crisis carries gendered consequences: nearly 30% of women surveyed in emergency relief pools revealed they have been forced to stay in or delay leaving unsafe relationships purely because they cannot afford to live independently.

Throughout her seven-night campaign, Bing will be based entirely around the Circular Quay train station area, remaining on the streets 24/7 without the basic comforts of shelter, privacy, or hot running water. Instead of solitary isolation, however, she is turning her location into an open forum for public consciousness.

Under her “Sit With Me” initiative, Bing is actively inviting members of the public, local leaders, and commuters to pull up a patch of pavement, share a conversation, and confront the reality of the street.
