At the first meeting of the newly elected council, Ku-ring-gai Councillors have voted in a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
For the first time in Ku-ring-gai Council history, both positions are being filled by females.
During the meeting held on the 8th of October, Councillor Christine Kay was elected to serve a two-year term as Mayor until September of 2026. Mayor Kay has been representing the St Ives Ward since 2018 and was the previous Deputy Mayor prior to her new appointment.
Alongside her, Councillor Kim Wheatley will serve as Deputy Mayor for a one-year term until September 2025. Cr Wheatley was first elected to Council in 2021, and has since been representing the Wahroonga Ward since.
‘It is an honour to have been elected Mayor at such an important time for Ku-ring-gai,’ says Mayor Kay. ‘The new Council will need to address some significant challenges over the coming months, and I intend to take a collaborative approach to working through these challenges.’
Mayor Kay went on to acknowledge former Mayor Sam Ngai, who was re-elected to the Roseville Ward following the Local Government Elections.
‘I would like to thank outgoing Mayor Sam Ngai for his work in leading the Council’s response to the NSW Government’s planning reforms,’ says Mayor Kay.
