A bronze, two-metre-tall honour roll plaque has been stolen from the entrance gate into Turramurra Memorial Park. The theft is believed to have taken place on late Sunday, 21st of July, or early Monday morning on the 22nd of July.
Scribed onto the honour roll were the names of 67 Turramurra residents, commemorating their service in the First World War.
Ku-ring-gai Council has condemned the theft, with Mayor Sam Ngai regarding it as appalling.
‘The construction of this honour roll, and the surrounding memorial gate, was funded through community donations to commemorate the fallen of the First World War,’ says Mayor Ngai. ‘It provided an ongoing and solemn reminder of the service of local residents fighting for our nation on faraway battlefields.’
Hornsby police are investigating the incident. Ku-ring-gai Council are urging any witnesses to come forward.
‘It is appalling to think that, nearly 100 years on, the roll has been stolen in the dead of night,’ says Mayor Ngai.
