Sailing along the Nile on the Uniworld River Tosca was nothing short of breathtaking. As I sat enjoying high tea at the legendary Old Cataract Hotel, looking out over the timeless landscape, I truly felt like I had stepped back in time. It was a scene straight out of an Agatha Christie novel – though, thankfully, with far less drama and infinitely more luxury!
I absolutely love to travel, and for years, my husband had dreamed of seeing Egypt. When we finally decided to make it happen, we knew there was no better way to experience the magic of the pharaohs than by sailing down the Nile with Uniworld.

Our journey began in the bustling, vibrant heart of Egypt: Cairo. I cannot stress enough that you need a few dedicated days to properly absorb this city. We spent our time marveling at the sheer scale of the Pyramids of Giza and standing face-to-face with the enigmatic Sphinx. A major highlight of our Cairo stay was the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM).
Seeing the King Tutankhamun display up close is an absolute must – it brings the history of this ancient civilisation to life. But beyond the monuments, Cairo itself pulses with an energy that demands to be explored.
After leaving Cairo, we took a short flight to Luxor to board the River Tosca, our beautiful home for the next seven nights. First impressions matter, and the River Tosca did not disappoint. The ship is beautifully furnished with an elegant, classic charm, and the staterooms are exceptionally huge for a river cruise ship!
Our days fell into a perfect rhythm: early morning explorations before the heat of the day set in, followed by a return to our wonderful ship to relax, cool off, and recharge.
During our seven days of cruising, we were treated to a parade of historical marvels. We explored the towering columns of Karnak, the beautiful preservation of Hathor, the majesty of Luxor, and the unique double temple of Kom Ombo. However, descending into the Valley of the Kings was a true revelation. The vibrancy and color of the ancient paintwork that still clings to the tomb walls after thousands of years is simply astonishing.
Bringing all of this history together was our dedicated Egyptologist, Mohamed. He was an absolute wealth of knowledge, effortlessly answering every single question our group threw his way and giving deep context to the ruins we walked through.
Of course, a great holiday requires a little retail therapy! We had plenty of time to shop and immerse ourselves in the local culture, from the colorful stalls of a Nubian Village to the labyrinthine markets of Cairo.
Yet, some of my favorite memories are the quiet ones. I absolutely loved spending my afternoons sitting out on the ship’s deck, watching local life on the Nile drift by and picturing what this exact view might have looked like in Ancient Egyptian times.
What truly elevated this trip from a great vacation to an unforgettable experience was the wonderful staff onboard the River Tosca. They could not do enough for us and possessed an incredible knack for anticipating our needs. Within a day, they had worked out our favorite drinks; I would barely have time to sit down on the deck before a crisp, cold glass of rosé was magically delivered to my hand.
Cruising the Nile is really something spectacular, but experiencing it with Uniworld takes it to an entirely new level. If Egypt has been on your bucket list, this is the way to do it.
