Asquith Girls High School have been winners of the Law Society of NSW’s Mock Trial Competition.
After twelve years, Asquith Girls are the first NSW Public school to take home the title, defeating St Paul’s Catholic College in the finals.
‘They must understand and predict the opposition’s arguments, plan a case theory, prepare witnesses for cross examination, as well as plan how to cross examine the other team,’ said Head Teacher at Asquith Girls, Phillipa Somerville.
In the mock trials, team members assume the roles of witness, solicitors, barristers, and court officers, and, unlike real trials, are not given a brief of the opposing sides’ evidence or witness statements.
In the Asquith Girls team were 10 students from Year 10, and 1 student from Year 11.
‘We are so excited to be representing a public school in this competition, and now to win,’ said Year 10 student Lottie.
Since the beginning of 2024, the students have participated in 7 rounds of the competition. In the quarter final, the team up against St Frances Catholic College, and in the semifinals, were victorious against Ravenswood School for Girls.
