The power of creativity is taking centre stage at Chatswood’s Art Space Gallery, where the annual Operation Art exhibition has officially opened. There is under one week left with the exhibition running until June 28. The inspiring showcase features vibrant artworks from students across central and greater Sydney, aimed at brightening the lives of young patients.
For over 30 years, this joint initiative between The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and the NSW Department of Education has used the visual arts to foster healing. This year, 20 standout pieces have been selected for the prestigious Hospital 50 collection, earning a permanent home on the walls of Westmead to bring comfort and joy to families facing difficult times.
Willoughby City Mayor Tanya Taylor emphasized the profound impact of the initiative. “When a child is in hospital, it can be a difficult and emotional experience,” Mayor Taylor said. “A colourful artwork, a familiar character, or a scene that sparks imagination can provide a welcome moment of comfort and distraction when it is needed most.”
Beyond the gallery walls, the program continues to enrich the community through student workshops and teacher professional development.
