North Sydney Rate Rise Knockback

Thumbs down for North Sydney Councils

After the request for an SRV of 87% was knocked down by regulator IPART, North Sydney Council are still determined to get a rate rise.

Launching a new campaign, Council have turned to ratepayers to ask what services should be cut, and stress how important rate rises are for financial integrity of Council. Residents are encouraged to register on Council’s website and provide feedback.

Online, Council outlines a gloomy future that ratepayers are soon to experience.

‘Waiting for the bus might mean standing in the rain or feeling unsafe at night if shelters and seating aren’t upgraded.

‘Attending a local event or exhibition could become a rare treat if arts, culture, and community events are reduced.

‘Driving around town could take longer and feel less safe if roads and traffic signs continue to wear out.

‘Strolling down the street might not be as pleasant if street cleaning is reduced and litter builds up.

‘Heavy rain might mean flooding in your street or damage to the environment if our stormwater systems aren’t improved.’

Council endorsed the ‘North Sydney – Towards a Sustainable Future’ Engagement Plan in July, and have since been routinely pushing their ‘Let’s talk…’ campaign.

Some vocal residents are none too happy with the current state of council. Leaving comments under its social media handles such as, “North Sydney Council you totally butchered the cost of the pool”, and, “The Mayor on Channel 9 News denying that the financial situation was down to mismanagement of the pool project… not sure how she kept a straight face while proceeding to gaslight the community”.

Feedback from the survey closed on 29 August. Results are yet to be made public.
