In a new partnership with DV Safe Phone, North Sydney Council residents can now donate their old mobile phones to people escaping domestic violence.
Collection boxes have been installed at Stanton Library, the Coal Loader, and at Council’s Customer Service Centre. Each donated handset is wiped, repaired, and passed on to frontline domestic-violence services.
‘Perpetrators often take, break or monitor victims’ phones,’ says Mayor Zoe Baker. ‘A second phone can be a lifeline… if you’ve got an old phone in a drawer, please consider donating it. That small act could make a world of difference.’
The partnership aligns with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and marks the beginning of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, that ran until 10 December.
For the Council, the phone-donation drive is part of a commitment to preventing domestic and family violence.
‘Violence has no place in our community,’ Mayor Baker says. ‘Through awareness, education and practical initiatives like DV Safe Phone, we can help change lives one phone at a time.’
Donations can be dropped into DV Safe Phone collection boxes during opening hours at the three Council sites.
Details on preparing a phone for donation are available at dvsafephone.org.
