A New Cost of Living … Envy

As we near the end of the financial year we are planning to submit our tax returns, where our finances will be at the forefront of our minds.  We are all aware of the impact of the cost of living which carries its weight in stress.

As we all have instant online access to our money, we can witness its downward movements, where this constant monitoring makes us all financial analysts of our own money.

When finances become tight, we can feel unfulfilled, anxious, and compare ourselves to others.  So, what do we do to make ourselves feel better?  We spend more!

We seek solace in a new piece of clothing, tantalize our tongues with food and liquor, or even partake in a game of chance.  Why is this?  Because we are creatures of envy, as through social media we can easily witness others progressing with their lives, where it dually recognises our own need for reward with the embellishment of envy that goes with it.  So how do we help ourselves out of this dilemma?

If we cannot spend the money, we desire to keep us happy, we need to think creatively; we change our relationship with happiness itself.

We can’t deny our happiness lies within our materialistic needs, do all our purchases though provide us fulfilment?  If we can look beyond what scintillates our senses, we can discover our true happiness which is held within our wisdom, by mitigating our hardships and still living a meaningful life.  We can appreciate that our desires are neither beauty nor beast, but an aspect of ourselves that we can see through and determine what costs and benefits it brings; particularly at times like today when finances are tight, and our temperaments are tested.
