Barker Students Helping Children in Poverty

BARKER College high schoolers are sponsoring students from the world’s poorest countries.

In partnership with Compassion Australia, the international Christian charity supporting children living in poverty, Barker students raised over $3,500 during their annual House Fair in March.

Selling food and drinks at the fair means the funds raised will support six impoverished children for a year.

Barker College House Captain Angelina Barnsdall, a Year 10 student, proposed the idea to engage her peers in transforming the lives of others.

‘At our school we have a motto called ‘The Red Thread’… Just as the red thread symbolises the interconnectedness of our school community, I wanted to encourage students to remember that our actions, regardless of how big or small, are intricately linked to the wellbeing of those in need,’ says Angelina. ‘Each kind gesture, each act of support, is like a stitch in the tapestry of compassion that we are collectively weaving.’

Each year group, 7 to 12, will be sponsoring a different child. The year group will be responsible for letter writing, celebrating the achievements of their sponsored child, and organising fundraising for them.

‘Our partnership with schools is much deeper than fundraising. We aim to provide students with meaningful opportunities to help alleviate child poverty, inspiring them that their actions can truly make a difference,’ says Cooper Kruize with Compassion Australia.
