The “Meaning” of Christmas

Christmas has landed upon us again so quickly.

For some Christmas means family, companionship, gratitude and generosity.  It has an emotional and spiritual significance, and of course there are the gifts.  When we ask the question of what Christmas means to us, it uncovers a word that is the foundation to how we relate to everything and everyone around us, MEANING.  We may not think about it but everything our minds determine has an embodiment of meaning to it, where our ability to find meaning is an integral part of prospering our lives and mental health.

According to Neurologist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl, to find meaning is something that is unique and makes us genuinely human. It is our salvation and our frustration, as our inability to find meaning can bring our undoing.  Meaning forms a state of rebellion, we will go to great lengths to preserve our values and defend our freedom.  It is through meaning we summons our strength; rebuild hope and reminds us of the resilience we thought was lost.  Meaning fulfills us in pleasure, aids our suffering and connects us in charity and community.

Sometimes when we look for answers to complex questions, we often become bewildered for where to look.  As when we look for meaning in our lives the answer is in the question itself, it is “MEANING”.  As everything we do in life comes from our motive, instilling a sense of purpose and energy.   It is through meaning we can make not only our Christmas memorable, but also each day of our lives.  Meaning instils gratitude for what we have, and who we have lost.   It is through meaning we realise a grander vision, that life is too important to be shackled with pettiness.  As somewhere between the polarities of order and chaos we determine what comes of existence.  Where, what is left…. is how we define it.
