Chatswood’s Bistro Kai Delivers

Artful Cooking — but Service Could Use a Boost

Chatswood’s Bistro Kai Delivers

Bistro Kai is located opposite Chatswood Chase and offers contemporary, Japanese-influenced dishes that blend comfort with creativity.

You’ll want to plan ahead and book as by 6pm on a weeknight, the restaurant was already packed, a clear sign of its popularity.

The atmosphere is pleasant, and the menu leans towards a more adult-focused experience. The waitstaff were warm and attentive, though as the restaurant filled up, it became noticeably harder to attract their attention. While they remained friendly and accommodating, it was clear the team was a little under-staffed for the pace of service.

Our meal began with the Cherry Moon sourdough with white soy butter. This dish immediately set the tone, perfect for sharing and a clever balance of flavours, where the subtle sweetness of the soy butter elevated the bread into something far more than a simple starter.  We also tried the fries with seaweed seasoning, which added a salty, umami punch that made them a memorable side.

For mains, the Chicken Maryland with cauli blossom and abalone sauce was tender and juicy, with the abalone sauce lending depth and richness without overpowering the dish. It was elegant and comforting all at once. The Spanner crab pasta with bisque and herbs, while enjoyable, didn’t quite live up to the other dishes. While well-prepared, it lacked wow factor.

To finish, we tried the cheesecake with Uji matcha and white chocolate. It was an adventurous dessert with earthy, bitter notes from the matcha, though I struggled to detect much of the promised white chocolate. It’s certainly a dish for those with an acquired taste, but not one I personally would order again.

Overall, Bistro Kai delivers a polished dining experience, with thoughtful, inventive dishes and a vibrant atmosphere. With a little more staffing support, it would easily elevate from good to exceptional. Still, for a modern, dining destination in the area, it’s well worth a visit.
