In this edition, our Editor, Claudia Butjerevic, reviews a powerful book on domestic violence written by a local author. It’s troubling that despite repeated calls from our leaders, we’re still having the same conversations.
Domestic violence robs individuals of dignity, autonomy, and security, with scars lasting a lifetime. Now is the time to act. Those of you who know me well, know that I have often stated Hornsby Police spend a significant amount of time on incidents related to domestic violence.
Women continue to reach out to me for guidance and support, and they will always will be welcomed with open arms. But perhaps now, it’s time we move beyond words and push for meaningful legislation that truly breaks the cycle.
What’s Clare’s Law about and why do we need this?
Clare’s Law, named after Clare Wood, who tragically lost her life to domestic violence in England, empowers individuals by granting access to vital police information about potential perpetrators.
Imagine empowering women with the knowledge up front about someone they’ve met and started dating who already had a history of stalking, intimating, assaulting previous partners. Imagine if women could protect themselves before it’s too late.
This law is about protecting potential future victims from the perils of domestic and intimate partner violence. Clare’s Law is already enacted in South Australia with more States on the path to making communities safer.
