The Sydney North Planning Panel is holding a public meeting about the site of Lizard Rock on the 9th of December 2024.
Lizard Rock, now named Patyegarang, is owned by the Metropolitical Local Aboriginal Land Council (MLALC), who were granted the 71-hectare site after the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983.
In 2022, MLALC submitted a planning proposal to have the site developed, document referring to developing 450 new dwellings. Northern Beaches Council publicly pushed back, saying the proposal would see the destruction of “45 football fields of bushland”.
Now, the planning proposal has an undetermined status. The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure requested the MLALC provide further information after community and Council concerns of inconsistency with the proposal. With this additional material, a report was delivered to the Sydney North Planning Panel for consideration.
On the 9th, the public are welcomed to attend a public meeting about the report and proposal, after which the Panel will make a recommendation on the final decision.
Lizard Rock had previously been under the purview of Member for Davidson Matt Cross, though the area has since been relocated to fall under the Member for Wakehurst Michael Regan.
Matt Cross MP continues to have an interest in the development of Patyegarang, asking the NSW Minister for Planning and public Spaces on the status of the site in September during meeting of Parliament.
‘Our community has been advocating to protect Patyegarang… Patyegarang is situated on precious bushland,’ says Matt Cross MP. ‘We need to build more homes in Sydney – but it should be in consultation with the community and through our planning processes. There needs to be “plan” in “planning”, including investment in local infrastructure.’
Registrations close for the meeting on the 5th of December.
