Shoulder Surgery Reimagined

Medical Milestone Highlights

  • NSW First: Sydney Adventist Hospital (The San) is the first in New South Wales to offer Mako robotic-arm assisted shoulder replacement.
  • Surgeon Expertise: The landmark procedure is performed by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Marcus Chia.
  • Advanced Technology: The Mako SmartRobotics™ system utilizes 3D CT-based planning and real-time guidance for pinpoint accuracy.
  • Patient Benefits: Potential advantages include improved joint stability, better range of motion, and reduced postoperative pain.
  • Faster Recovery: The robotic approach supports a more confident and quicker return to daily activities.
  • Proven Success: While new to shoulders in NSW, the technology has already been used in millions of successful hip and knee procedures worldwide.

Sydney Adventist Hospital is marking a significant milestone in orthopaedic care, becoming the first hospital in New South Wales to offer Mako robotic-arm assisted shoulder replacement surgery.

The landmark procedure is being performed this month at the San by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Marcus Chia, bringing a technology already proven in hip and knee replacements into shoulder surgery for the first time in the state.

The Mako SmartRobotics™ system from Stryker uses advanced 3D CT-based planning and real-time robotic guidance to assist surgeons with highly accurate implant positioning while protecting healthy bone and soft tissue. Millions of hip and knee procedures have been performed worldwide using the technology, with strong evidence supporting improved precision and long-term outcomes.

Dr Chia says extending the technology to the shoulder represents an important step forward in enhancing precision, safety and quality of life for patients.

“Robotic-arm assisted shoulder replacement may offer improved joint stability, function and range of motion, along with reduced postoperative pain and faster recovery, supporting a more confident return to everyday activities,” says Dr Chia.

“The milestone reflects the San’s ongoing commitment to investing in advanced surgical technologies, ensuring the local community has access to world-class, minimally invasive orthopaedic care close to home.”
