Lighthouses warn ships of dangerous reefs helping sailors avoid disaster by giving them a shining beacon to sail towards.

But when it comes to your career, just steering clear of every employment rock and occupational reef isn’t always enough to ensure you’ll have a long and pleasant career journey or even prevent being shipwrecked in a dead-end job.

In my dad’s day you’d walk out of school, join a company at seventeen and retire from that same place half a century later. Talent and hard work helped but only the lucky got promoted. It was a simpler time.

Today far fewer people stick in one career for a lifetime so you will have to make very important choices about the jobs you choose, how long you stay, and where you move next. Career planning is an intricate dance between what you like doing. Does it give your life meaning and happiness while all being balanced with how much they pay!

The lighthouse approach to guiding your career means imagining your ultimate dream role—CEO of Westpac, a V8 supercar champion, a scientist who finally cures cancer, or just a life of caring and helping others. Let your imagination soar and dream big.

Now you may never actually achieve that perfect gig and to be honest, that’s kind of the point. Having a big, bright, burning career beacon to head towards means you’ll more than likely choose jobs that get you part of the way towards your ultimate career goal and even some of your dream is way better than a lifetime stuck in a job you really hate.

Straight Talk Australia Counselling are the experts in helping you avoid the hazards of your life, like drinking too much, improving your relationship, or just making better career decisions.
