A Revolution in Dignity: Videri Australia Unveils Innovative Small-Home Dementia Care Residence in Cherrybrook

Key Takeaways

  • Innovative Model: The newly completed Cherrybrook facility is Videri's 24th Australian residence, accommodating just 10 occupants to mirror a real family setting.
  • Gold Standard Framework: This local setting fully satisfies the Aged Care Royal Commission's explicit request for small-scale, domestic, and resident-focused operations.
  • Holistic Routine: Residents avoid cold, clinical shift timetables, focusing instead on meaningful daily activities, shared cooking, gardening, and music.

A new era of dementia care has arrived in the heart of Cherrybrook. Videri Australia has officially opened its 24th residence, offering local families a revolutionary alternative to traditional, large-scale aged care facilities.

Designed on an innovative “small-home” model, the new site supports just 10 residents. It is a deliberate departure from clinical institutions, functioning instead as a genuine family home where 24/7 care is provided by a dedicated team of Resident Care staff and “Homemakers.”

For families in the Hills District and Hornsby, specialised local options have historically been limited.

As Australia’s population ages, dementia has become the nation’s leading cause of death, with approximately 466,500 Australians currently living with the condition.

“Our vision has always been to revolutionise dementia care in Australia by replacing institutional models with real homes, real relationships and real daily life,” said Leah Gabolinscy, Chief Executive Officer, Videri Australia. “Videri Cherrybrook means families in and around Cherrybrook, Castle Hill and Hornsby don’t have to move their loved one far from everything they know to access high quality dementia care. They can stay close to their GPs, communities and social networks, in a small home that truly feels like home.”

The opening has drawn strong support from the Federal Member for Berowra, The Hon Julian Leeser MP, who recently toured the home.

“Dementia care is moving towards a more modern approach and this new Videri home in Cherrybrook reflects that shift. With its small-home model centred on comfort, familiarity and a true sense of home, it provides a more personal and dignified option for local families, close to their community and support networks.”

Often cited as the “gold standard,” this model aligns with the Aged Care Royal Commission’s call for more domestic, resident-centred care.

In a Videri home, daily life focuses on meaningful activities, gardening, shared meals, and music – rather than rigid clinical schedules. This approach is proven to reduce distress and foster a true sense of belonging.

Since opening its first home in 2011, Videri has grown to 24 homes across Sydney, with further homes under development. Homes are now spread across the Eastern Suburbs, Hunters Hill, Hornsby Shire, North Shore, Northern Beaches, Hills District, Inner West and Sutherland Shire.

For local families and clinicians, the message is clear: high-quality, dignified dementia care is now available right here in our community.
