Dry July was born in 2008, when three friends, Brett, Kenny, and Phil, wanted to abstain from alcohol, coining it their “dry July”.

Unbeknownst to the trio, who had hoped in the process to raise enough money to purchase a new television for their local hospital, their efforts would have them raising over $250,000. Since then, every year, the Dry July Foundation hosts their annual event, donating funds for cancer support.

Australia’s are invited to cork their wine bottles and turn away from their beers for the month, and get their friends and family involved with donating to the cause.

‘Every three minutes, someone in Australia is diagnosed with cancer – and more than 15,000 Australians will receive that life-changing diagnosis this July alone. This is Why We Dry July. To help fund vital, often-overlooked services that make a real difference for people affected by cancer during one of the toughest times of their lives,’ says Gillian Gillian Odbert, CEO of the Dry July Foundation.

‘Dry July is about more than taking a break from alcohol. Every person who takes on the challenge is making a commitment to support not only their own health but the wellbeing of others too… This year, money raised will go to 40 cancer organisations around the country who are involved in many aspects of the cancer journey including transport, treatment, wellness programs and support services. These organisations rely on the generosity of the community and cannot continue without ongoing support.’
