Marian St ACTION launched a new campaign to save Marian Street Theatre.
The Killara theatre has been left unusable for more than a decade and is a thorn in the side of Ku-ring-gai Council.
In August, Tony Bates, Chair of Marian St ACTION, called on all Ku-ring-gai residents and art lovers to email and petition council.
‘Ku-ring-gai’s vibrant grassroots arts scene has been forced out of the area, with groups like Marian Street Theatre for Young People, Pymble Players, Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic, Sanskriti, Hummingsong Choir, and Challis Singers performing elsewhere,’ says Mr Bates. ‘Meanwhile, Willoughby has four performance spaces and two visual arts venues; Northern Beaches has two performance and four visual arts spaces; and Ryde is building two new performance spaces in additional to its four heritage houses for arts organisations.’
Leaflets were sent to every Ku-ring-gai household with the message to email Council by 31 August to inspire change. The design for the restored theatre has been approved; it’s now a matter of Council allocating sufficient funds to the project.
Council placed the approved build of Marian St as Option 4 (of 4) in their current Special Rates Variation to reduce its infrastructure backlog. The approved Marian St Theatre design includes two indoor and one outdoor performance spaces, a rehearsal room, new amenities, and a café opening into Selkirk Park.
Marian St ACTION are calling on residents and art lovers to email Ku-ring-gai Council by 31 August.
