Each year, thousands of Australians lace up their walking shoes to take part in The March Charge.
An estimated 169,000 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer this year. The donations raised during this month-long fundraiser will go towards the Cancer Council, and cancer research.
Participants set a distance goal to complete throughout March, raising funds to support cancer research, prevention programs, and services.
For local participant, Lee, this is the second year she is taking up the challenge.
In 2025, she took up the fitness challenge as a way to get back into being active. ‘The March Charge popped up on my social media and I thought, why not? It’s for a great cause,’ explains Lee.
This year, Lee is aiming to reach a 300kms step goal for the month. This means she will have a walk 13,000 steps per day to reach the goal. Her donation goal is $3,000, which equates to $10 a kilometre.
‘This year my friend, Tanya has joined me for the March Charge. and we also have a team of the two of us. It’s great to be doing the Charge and it’s even better when you had a friend who can keep you accountable and you can do the walks with, it makes the challenge easier,’ says Lee.
To prepare, Lee has started easing into walking long distances and going to the gym to work on strength and cardio.
She believes those looking to participate in the March Charge should not think about it, and just take on the challenge.
‘It’s a great way to challenge your mind, body and spirit. Last year, my target was 85 kms, which at the time seemed like a lot for me, but I made it a goal to get out every day to walk and go to the gym for boxing class and surprised myself. I surpassed with 247kms.’
For this participant, supporting Cancer Council is about community, compassion, and hope.
