Climate 200 Are Changing Politics Teal

Climate 200 is propelling climate-minded community Independents into Federal politics.

Climate 200 is a crowd-funded initiative that supports and funds promising community independent campaigns and candidates. During the 2019 Federal Election season, Climate 200 was formed out of growing concern with political integrity, female representation, and the state of climate policies.

At their “Doing Politics Differently” event at the beginning of May, Climate 200 discussed their plan to continue broadening the landscape of Australian politics by helping elect Independents that represent their constituents.

‘Rather than changing politicians’ minds, the community would rather change politicians,’ said Byron Fay, Executive Director of Climate 200.

During the 2022 Election, efforts by donors and volunteers saw Liberal safe seats across the country turn Teal.

Kylea Tink was elected as the Member for North Sydney, Sophie Scamps became the Member for Mackellar, and Nicolette Boele cut the Bradfield Liberal margin down to 4.2 per cent.

The “Doing Politics Differently” event held a panel with Kylea Tink, Nicolette Boele, and Katerina Gaita, a community organiser who was instrumental in setting up Voices of Goldstein. The panel spoke of the importance and value of organising, and their experiences becoming the chosen candidates.

Climate 200 and Nicolette Boele are steadfast in the run for the Bradfield seat in the upcoming election.

‘[The] community is looking for something different, looking for an alternative,’ said Byron Fay. ‘This is ground zero. Bradfield is the main place where there is opportunity.’

Climate 200 have launched their Community Accelerator Matching Fund.

Any donations by the public will be doubled in support of independent campaigns. In celebration of his 94th birthday, Adelaide local David Donaldson announced his donation of $94,000, asking the community to come together to match the donation.

Climate 200 have now raised over $100,000 through their Community Accelerator Fund.
