New research reveals that men’s mental health is costing the Australian economy an estimated $3.76 billion each year.
Commissioned by not-for-profit Mentoring Men, this research surveyed 2,000 men aged 35 to 50 in NSW, Victoria, and the ACT, asking after the status of their mental health.
Findings show that 47% of Aussie men experience general stress and anxiety, 26% experience relationship-related stress, and 24% face parenting-related stress. Australian men struggle with emotional regulation (40%) and 36% have difficulties maintaining relationships.
While most of the surveyed men (95%) acknowledged that some form of support would benefit them, 42% admitted to ‘pushing through on their own’.
‘The issues revealed by the Mentoring Men research are not just a problem for Aussie men. Healthy men are one half of the equation leading to healthy families, workplaces, communities, society and the wider economy,’ said Filipe Gama e Silva, CEO of Mentoring Men. ‘It is a crisis that deserves national attention and government investment.’
