Quick-thinking from a teen St John volunteer proved lifesaving during a medical emergency at an inter-school running event.
For his swift action, thirteen-year-old Charlie Morrison has been awarded the prestigious St John Ambulance Meritorious Care Award. Drawing from his first aid training with St John Ambulance in the Hornsby Division, Charlie was able to help a fellow student who experienced a severe asthma attack mid-race.
‘Charlie demonstrated extraordinary maturity and courage in a moment of crisis,’ said Divisional Superintendent Isabelle Moutia. ‘His ability to stay calm, apply his training, and care for another student at just 13 is truly inspiring. He embodies the spirit of service and compassion that St John seeks to instil in all its members.
The Meritorious Care Award is reserved for members whose actions directly influence the survival or critical outcome of a patient. It is one of St John’s highest clinical honours, and Charlie’s acknowledgment is rare given his age.
‘Charlie’s courage and compassion remind us that age is no barrier to making a profound difference,’ said Ms Moutia. ‘He is a shining example of the impact youth can have when equipped with the skills and confidence to step forward in times of need.’
