Young teenager lifesaver Saskia Rundle-Trowbridge has become a local hero.
The 16-year-old took action while on patrol on Warriewood Beach. Saskia rescued three teenage boys trapped in a cave near the Warriewood Blowhole, one of the stranded boys having sustained head injuries. He was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital.
A Nipper in her younger years, then a cadet, Saskia is a Surf Life Saving New South Wales junior and frequent Warriewood Beach goer. Saskia is in Year 11 at Ravenswood School for Girls and a part of the Knox Grammar – Ravenswood Cadet Unit.
‘It was quite a tricky situation for both us and them,’ Saskia told ABC Breakfast News. ‘I had to say “I’m a surf lifesaver. It’s going to be all right.”’
Sydney’s Northern Beaches can be dangerous for both experienced beachgoers and the general public.
At the tail end of 2023, Northern Beaches Council launched a summer beach safety campaign to combat the number of drownings and reckless activity. Most drownings are occurring at unpatrolled locations or unpatrolled times.
Surf Life Saving are urging swimmers to stay safe, swim between the flags, and have a plan in place when swimming in unpatrolled locations.
